The Turn vs. GolfStatus
Both run live scoring for golf outings. The difference is what you pay and who does the work. Here's an honest comparison — including where GolfStatus is the better choice.
The short version
GolfStatus is software you operate: a full tournament-management platform with registration, websites, sponsor tools, and live scoring — powerful, and priced accordingly, with fees that scale as your field grows and an app your players download to score.
The Turn is a service you hire: $199 flat per event, no per-player fees, no percentage of anything. We build your event page, print your cart signs and QR scorecards, set up your pairings, and support you on event day. Your players scan a QR code on their cart and score from their phone's browser — no app, no accounts.
If you run a national fundraising program across dozens of events with dedicated staff, look at GolfStatus. If you're an organizer who wants the live-leaderboard experience without becoming a software administrator, that's exactly what The Turn was built for.
What the fees actually look like
GolfStatus's model (like most tournament platforms) combines platform access with payment-processing and per-registration technology fees on the money that flows through it. Individual arrangements vary — some events qualify for sponsored access — but the structural difference is simple: their cost scales with your field; ours doesn't.
| Field size | Typical entry fees collected | Percentage-based fees at ~3–5% | The Turn |
|---|---|---|---|
| 72 players (18 teams) | $10,800 at $150/player | ~$324–$540 | $199 flat |
| 100 players (25 teams) | $15,000 at $150/player | ~$450–$750 | $199 flat |
| 144 players (36 teams) | $21,600 at $150/player | ~$648–$1,080 | $199 flat |
Illustrative math at common outing entry fees; verify current GolfStatus pricing for your event — their model and sponsorship programs change. The point isn't the exact number: it's that one model grows with your success and one doesn't.
For a charity event, that difference is proceeds. Every dollar of platform fees is a dollar that doesn't reach the cause.

Where GolfStatus genuinely wins
Honesty makes this page useful, so: if you need enterprise registration workflows, run many events per year across chapters, want deep sponsor-package management, or have staff whose job is operating event software, GolfStatus is a mature platform built for exactly that. Several national nonprofits run their golf programs on it for good reasons.
Where The Turn wins
- You don't operate anything. Send us your team list; we do the rest.
- No app friction. The #1 day-of failure at outings is “half the field never downloaded the app.” A QR scan works on every phone, instantly.
- Flat price. $199 whether you have 40 players or 144. Your fundraiser's success doesn't raise your software bill.
- A human on event day. Not a ticket queue — the person who built your event, on call while your field is on the course.
What organizers switch over
The two stories we hear most:
- “The fees were insane.” Organizers of mid-size charity events who loved live scoring but watched percentage fees eat proceeds. (The Turn: $199, done.)
- “We outgrew the free apps.” Groups who tried consumer scoring apps and hit the wall — app downloads, no printed materials, no organizer dashboard, no support. (The Turn: the full outing experience without the platform price.)

Frequently asked questions
Is The Turn really $199 total?
Yes — $199 flat per event covers the event page, live scoring and leaderboards, printed cart signs and scorecards with QR codes, setup, and day-of support. And unlike registration platforms, The Turn never handles your entry-fee money — players register on your event page and you collect payment however you already do (Venmo, Square, checks, your own processor), with paid/unpaid tracked in your dashboard. There is no percentage, no processing markup, and no per-player fee, because your money never passes through us.
Do my players need to download anything?
No. One player per team scans the QR code on their cart sign and scores from their phone's browser. No apps, no accounts.
Can I keep my current registration setup and just use The Turn for scoring?
Yes — many events register through their own site, a platform, or even email and Venmo, and hire The Turn for the day-of experience. Send us the final team list and we handle the rest.
What if my course has bad cell reception?
Entering a score uses about as much data as sending a text — one bar is plenty, and players score from the cart between holes, not standing on a green. Every team also gets a printed scorecard as backup.
Does The Turn work at any course?
Yes. Nothing is installed at the course and the course doesn't need to provide anything — it runs entirely on your players' phones.
